Beira Baixa Railway Line electrified

The 27th of January 2021 will be marked in history on the Beira Baixa Railway Line, with the debut of an electric traction circulation in the modernized section between Covilhã and Guarda.

The purpose of the circulation was to inspect and test the catenary of the Beira Baixa Line, along the 46.1 km of the section that was the target of modernization and electrification works. The trip was ensured by a diesel locomotive, an electric locomotive and a van that carried out the filming and allowed the catenary to be checked along the route.

The modernization of the Covilhã - Guarda section encompasses the electrification of the section, the reinforcement and rehabilitation of the six century-old metal bridges, the increase in safety conditions and the construction of a juction between the Beira Alta Line and the Beira Baixa Line.
