Inauguration of the Mondego River Walkway

Last Sunday, November 6, the Mondego walkways were inaugurated.
Work supervised by afaplan, from 2019, until November 6, 2022, for the City Council of Guarda.
A work, in Nordic pine wood structure, where approximately 2,200m3 of wood were used along approximately 6 km.
These walkways have a total length of 12km and an average width of 1.5m. Of these, 6km were executed in a walkway type structure as shown in the following figure:
Along the route of the Passadiços do Mondego, some artworks were built:
- 3 Pedestrian Suspension Bridges, for crossing the Mondego River, in mixed steel and wood structure with steel suspension cables;
- Rehabilitation of the Bridge 0 and Ribas Bridge, with the replacement of the deck;
It was a challenge for the team, as this is a non-current type of structure in which the material "wood" played an important challenge both in terms of more in-depth knowledge of the use and behavior of this material, as well as of wood construction techniques.
The difficult accesses were also a challenge, both for the afaplan team and the Contractors' teams, due to the scarce and difficult accesses. Both for access to the work fronts and for transporting the materials, which were almost exclusively carried by human means.
This infrastructure makes the connection between the village of Videmonte and the Caldeirão Dam, taking advantage of six kilometers of already existing paths and integrating an area of six kilometers of crossings, walkways, and three suspension bridges with exuberant landscapes, where veredas, weirs, waterfalls, levadas, and windmills abound.
A project that all employees and their families are invited to visit.
The work took place before, during, and after the COVID-19 Pandemic, with the already known constraints.
